Fight against AIDS/STIs, UN System salutes Head of State leadership

(Ouagadougou, December 20, 2024). The Chief of Staff of the President of Faso, Captain Martha Céleste Anderson Dekomwin MEDAH, representing the President of Faso, Head of State, chaired on Thursday, December 19, the 21st ordinary session of the National Council for the Fight against AIDS and STIs (CNLS/IST).

This session was chaired by the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, President of the National Council for the Fight against AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (CNLS/IST).  The participants reviewed the implementation of the National Multisectoral Plan to Combat AIDS (PNM) 2023.

It appears that thanks to the sustained commitment of the Head of State through the implementation of the strategy of free treatment and biological monitoring tests as well as the mobilization of actors in the fight against AIDS in our country, 86% of people who know their HIV status are on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, and 53% of them have an undetectable viral load.

Captain Martha Céleste Anderson Dekomwin MEDAH, on behalf of the Head of State, expressed his gratitude to the technical and financial partners and all stakeholders for their continued commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In view of the achievements made, the representative of the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in our country, Aissata Guissé KASPAR, praised the leadership of the Head of State in the response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

“Your efforts in this fight in the complex security and humanitarian context, honor Burkina Faso on the sub-regional and international scene,” she stressed. Aissata Guissé KASPAR noted the stabilization of seroprevalence at 0.6%, the result of accessibility to antiretroviral treatments, and state support for financing HIV/AIDS-related expenses.

During this session, participants also identified programmatic shortcomings in achieving targets for screening, initiation of ARV treatment, suppression of viral load and mobilization of resources.

Thus, the Chief of Staff of the President of Faso stressed the need to drive new momentum in strengthening combined prevention measures, treating people living with HIV and improving human rights in Burkina Faso.

He stressed the need to remove the bottlenecks that hinder the achievement of the “95-95-95” objectives in order to meet the 2030 target. The Chief of Staff of the President of Faso called on all stakeholders to take synergy of actions to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health problem in Burkina Faso by 2030.

At the end of the work of this 21st session of the CNLS/IST, all stakeholders renewed their commitment and determination to fight AIDS.
